Having trouble getting my bike to shift but the shaft looks fine. Could worn clutch plates or linkage jams be the problem? Any budget friendly fixes youve tried would be great to hear about.

Right.. shifting issues are a pain in the a$$!
Check your linkage really close. I had a similar problem once.. turned out a tiny pebble had jammed itself where the linkage connected to the transmission.
A little pick, WD40 and bit more patience did the job. Saved me a lot!!

Thanks for the guidance! I'll definitely give the linkage a closer look to see if a pesky pebble or something similar is causing the trouble.

Take a look at the clutch cable slack, it should be about 2–3mm. If it's off, give it some lube or replace it. Also, check if the shift linkage is aligned correctly. If that doesn't fix the problem, you might have worn clutch plates. Keep us posted on what you find

Thank you @TrailBruiser for the advice though you're a tad bit late to the party because I already found the root of the issue. But your advice was on point because turns out it was a combo of worn clutch plates and some grime gumming up the linkage. I swapped out the plates and gave everything a good cleaning and lube and now my bike shifts are smoother than ever.

Sure thing! It might just be that the clutch plates aren't disengaging completely, or perhaps there's some sticky linkage at play. Start by checking the free play in the clutch lever. If everything looks good, go ahead and lubricate the linkage pivots. If it's a hydraulic system, it could be worth bleeding the clutch as well. It's an affordable fix and definitley worth a try before you start troubleshooting further

Start with the cheap and easy stuff, yeah I mean like clutch cable adjustment and linkage lubrication. If those don't help, worn clutch plates are a likely culprit, and DIY replacement is the most budget friendly way to address that.

Already got the issue sorted, was a mix of worn clutch plates and grime jamming up the linkage, just like you both mentioned.
